Any amount of acne can shoot your self-esteem down & negatively affect your confidence. Being completely transparent, I struggled a lot with being comfortable in my own skin & often felt anxious when having to go somewhere during a flare-up. With patience, a consistent routine, and changing some habits, I finally began to see a difference!
2021----------------2022-------------------2023
Back in highschool I struggled a little with acne, but nothing as severe as what I had the past couple years. Before the beginning of Covid, I was getting stress rashes, hormonal acne, and cystic acne. I tried a lot of topicals and skin care products but they did more harm than good.
Early last year I started oral antibiotics but still saw no change. I started to be intentional and more aware of the food I was consuming, began drinking more water, and laying off all the products. I simplified my routine to a cerave cleanser and lotion (per my dermatologist recommendation) but still saw no immediate changes/ improvement.
I decided to get on Accutane despite the many side effects. The process of getting on it and continuing it every month was stressful in itself (three appointments a month for bloodwork and tests, counseling appointments because of the negative side effects on mental health & the physical toll it took on me). After about four months, I began seeing some improvement but I decided to get off due all the side effects.
I did a ton of research on cystic acne, hormonal acne, hyperpigmentation, etc and found a couple products to try. I made a routine (see in my skin care holy grails post) and stuck with it, avoided dairy when possible, increased my water intake + a shot of apple cider vinegar, lowered stress in areas where I could, and now my skin has never felt / looked better!!
Acne can take such a toll on mental health. In my experience, it's critical to practice patience and kindness with yourself, be mindful and intentional, and always advocate for yourself. 🫶🏼💓
