Katie Juhlin

Rachel Mays

One of the first questions I asked Katie was about her favorite memory of us as kids. We grew up together, and trying to think of our earliest memory seemed impossible. When we asked our moms, we got back, “When you were literally babies!” and, “I remember you guys on a blanket together, Katie was probably six months old and Rachel was just over a year.” I remember Katie’s family taking me everywhere, except soccer practices and the mornings when my dad would drive us to school and blast LL Cool J’s “Rock the Bell” and “Goin Back to Cali” as we ran inside. We grew up just four houses down the road from each other, and she was there for what seems like every single milestone and hardship in my life. I think it’s essential I note that there probably has not been a moment in our friendship where have been able to be serious for more than ten minutes, and that most of our memories are of us just laughing about something incomprehensible.

Everyone needs a friend like Katie, someone you can just be your most carefree, non-filtered, vulnerable self around. She's hard working, invariably dependable, and if a person was a home- for me it would be her.

Meet Katie Juhlin.

Q & A

Rachel: What are your favorite recent memories of us?

Katie: You spending Christmas Eve with us and being the mediator when anyone would start arguing. Another one is when you and Nic just came to STL for Nics bday and we ate at an overpriced steakhouse and then went to armory. It was so wholesome seeing Mitchell & Nic bonding. And Mexico of course. I’m so happy I decided to go, being able to spend a week with you guys when we’ve all been so busy doing our own thing was the best. There’s nothing better than when we can all get together. I could watch videos from that trip all day, not a moment went by when one of us wasn’t laughing. I’m really grateful we can make a tradition out of that.

Rachel: Favorite things to do on weekends or whenever you have free time?

Katie: Anything I can do to destress and relax from the work week. It’s really important I make time to do things I enjoy like hangout with friends and family, and get a workout in.

Katie is currently working her busy season as a tax associate at Anders CPA and Advisors. She was undecided going into college, and after taking some business and exercise science classes, business felt more fitting. At Lindenwood, where she went to college & played soccer, every business major has to take two different accounting courses. There was one professor that, she says, is the reason she chose accounting. That professor later became her advisor and helped her get where she is today.

Rachel: Favorite dinner spot?

Katie: Katies Pizza and Pasta in Town & Country. I went there with my grandma and mom randomly and we fell in love with the food and the atmosphere! It’s family-owned and operated and I can’t wait for their closer location to open up so I can go more. Their Christmas Sangria was amazing!

Rachel: Coffee shop & order?

Katie: Either the Starbucks right down the street where I’ll get a sweet cream cold brew, sometimes with vanilla sweet cream cold foam. Or, Upshot Coffee in St Charles by Lindenwood when I was studying for my CPA. It’s modern fused with a unique, charming feel. I’d get the cold brew there too, and always added vanilla to it.

Rachel: How’s living with Mitchell been?

Katie: It’s something I would have never expected to do so young but it just made sense to take that next step. While I miss living with friends, it’s been so nice having him there to come home to after a long day, and just little things like cooking dinner together and movie nights.

Rachel: Favorite book?

Katie: Ugly Love by Colleen Hoover. I was never a big reader, but I somehow ended up on book tik tok and was intrigued to read some of her work. I’ve always loved rom-coms so I was a very quick fan of her writing.

Rachel: What you’re currently reading?

Katie: Layla by Colleen Hoover, and next on my list is the Silent Patient by Alex Michaelides.

Rachel: Favorite podcast?

Katie: “Fun on Weekdays” with Jenna Palek. She’s in her twenties and dates one of the guys from the bachelorette. It's a fun listen, she's around the same age as us so all of her content is pretty relatable. She talks about staying true to yourself, and that its okay to go at your own pace.

Favorite song atm- Probably Karma by Taylor Swift right now, but I love anything Justin Bieber, Lost by Frank Ocean, and country music.

Rachel: Favorite movie/s?

Katie: Elvis, Friends with Benefits, High School Musical, Mama Mia, and Greece

Rachel: Favorite show/s?

Katie: One Tree Hill, Hart of Dixie, New Girl

Rachel: Favorite childhood cartoon?

Katie: I was obsessed with Dora. I also loved Handy Manny and Jo Jo Circus.

Rachel: If you had to give a Ted Talk, what would you talk about?

Katie: How to stay clean, organized, and keep things in order

When we were little, my room resembled the fallout after a tornado and Katie’s was like the finished product of that older show on E! Network, “Who Want’s Clean House?” I remember her getting upset when someone would sit on her bed that she had just made, while the only time my bed was made was when Katie did it. She’d occasionally repack my suitcase where I had just chaotically thrown stuff in, and tidy up my room. Opposites attract!

Rachel: If you could have dinner with anyone (dead or alive) who would it be & why?

Katie: You. Wanna get dinner tonight?

Rachel: Hardest thing you’ve ever done?

Katie: Accepting that change is inevitable, adapting and transitioning into the real word (still working on that) and long work hours. And of course, not being able to see friends and family as frequently as much as I used to

Rachel: What’s something you changed your mind about recently?

Katie: A night in is better than a night out

Rachel: If you had to write a book about yourself what would it be titled?

Katie: One Thousand Emotions of a Cancer

Rachel: How would you describe yourself in two words?

Katie: Prepared and Organized

Rachel: Last time you laughed?

Katie: During this interview, I can always count on you for a good laugh

Rachel: What would you be amazing at with no prior experience ?

Katie: Professional organizer or web design

Rachel: Something you believed as a child that turned out to be false?

Katie: That it was illegal to have lights on in the car while driving

Rachel: Top of your bucket list

Katie: Europe

Rachel: Unpopular opinion/ Hot take

Katie: Chick fil a is overrated

Rachel: Biggest pet peeve?

Katie: Messiness, things are out of order, traffic

Rachel: Best advice

Katie: Don’t take life too seriously

Rachel: If you had to be trapped in any tv show what would it be?

Katie: Vanderpump rules

When I asked Katie, “What’s your morning routine?” she replied, “You should have asked jack that question” - so I asked him - see Jack's morning routine updated in his post under the INTRODUCING… category.

Rachel: Who is your biggest inspiration?

Katie: My sisters. They’re so selfless, and seeing the way they’ve dealt with and overcome hardships in their lives is inspiring. They consistently stay true to themselves, and have taught me that I can achieve anything I put my mind to. I’m continuously inspired by their creativity and growing up with them I saw firsthand how often they put others' needs before their own. And you, through every hardship you continue to remain a positive. You’re always putting others' happiness before your own, and you inspire me to want to be more like you.

Rachel: What's something you wish you never gave up on?

Katie: Piano lessons

Rachel: What's something you want to accomplish in the future?

Katie: Run a half marathon

Rachel: Why do you think were such good friends?

Katie: We can sit in silence without it being weird, we were neighbors for half of our lives, and we balance each other out because we’re complete opposites

Rachel: What's one thing you’re proud of yourself for?

Katie: The people I surround myself with, my support system
